Reading inclusive books is always fun!

Here are just a few reasons why you and your kids should read inclusive books:

1| The reader gets to see how all people are different and connect the book to real life situations.

2| It gives the reader opportunities to ask questions and do research about disabilities without awkwardness.

3| The reader can learn about all kinds of disabilities, devices, how to be an ally (and more) in fun and informative ways.

Are you having conversations with your kids at hom

Are you having conversations with your kids at home about disabilities?

Here are some easy tips on how to do that:

1| Diversify your home with books and movies that include disabled individuals. Having media that show diversity is a great way to explore differences in all of us! We’re pretty partial to Authentically Addie, but there are so many amazing books and movies that you can add alongside our book.

2| Have open and honest conversations with your kids. Learning starts at home and as parents, it’s important to teach our children what is right and wrong. Talk to your children about different disabilities, medical devices, and whatever else they’re curious about. Kids are typically more open than adults and are interested in learning topics that parents deem cool. We think disabilities are pretty cool to learn about!

3| Know that above all, God made everyone unique, and that’s a pretty awesome thing. The beauty of this world is that we are all created differently. If we were all the same it would be so boring! Different doesn’t mean bad, and being disabled definitely isn’t a bad thing. When parents make things awkward, that’s when kids pick up that a topic is awkward or taboo. Remind your kids that differences make us all special, disabled or not.

4| Don’t forget that kindness goes a long way and being an ally is one of the best things we can be to the disabled community. When we are kind, listen to disabled people, and show kids to do the same, we help break cycles of ugliness, disrespect, and lack of care for others. Talk about kindness with your kids. You can never talk about it too much.
